Instrument Technician Job Description:

This position is based at BOKONI Platinum Mine in ATOK, Limpopo Province, a renowned mining site in the region.


As an Instrument Technician, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of plant systems and equipment in strict accordance with instrumentation and technical requirements. Your role will contribute to the overall efficiency and reliability of the mining operations at the Bokoni Platinum Mine.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Continuous Technology Monitoring:

Conduct ongoing monitoring and assessment of technological advancements and best practices to identify areas for improvement.
Stay updated with the latest developments in instrument technology to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of plant systems.

Installation and Commissioning:

Install and commission new equipment and systems in line with established standards and protocols.
Ensure proper functioning and integration of new instruments and equipment within the existing infrastructure.

Design, Programming, and Calibration:

Perform detailed design work, including device programming, configuration, and calibration, adhering to specified parameters and requirements.
Ensure accurate and precise calibration of instruments to maintain optimal performance levels.

Maintenance and Performance Optimization:

Conduct regular maintenance activities on plant systems and equipment to ensure optimal performance and availability.
Proactively inspect and monitor equipment and systems to identify any potential issues or malfunctions.
Take appropriate corrective actions to address any identified problems, minimizing downtime and disruptions.

Equipment Evaluation and Disposal:

Evaluate the condition and performance of equipment, recommending decommissioning and disposal as per company standards and policies.
Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations during the disposal process.

Stock Management:

Effectively manage and monitor stock levels of critical spare parts, ensuring their availability to minimize any potential operational disruptions.

Data Analysis and Compliance:

Collect and analyze relevant data on system performance and equipment functionality, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of maintenance activities and performance metrics.

Project Management:

Identify, plan, and execute Control & Instrumentation projects using accepted project management principles.
Collaborate with production teams to minimize maintenance-related impacts on production operations.

Support and Reporting:

Support engineering availability and production performance targets through efficient and effective instrument maintenance and support.
Record and report maintenance-related information to the relevant planning office, contributing to the maintenance of the planned/asset maintenance system.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification, demonstrating a solid educational foundation.
  • National Diploma S4 in Electrical Engineering – Light Current, providing a comprehensive knowledge base in instrumentation.
  • Site-specific certification may be required, ensuring compliance with specific regulations and safety standards.
  • Valid driver’s license (Code B, EB, or C1) to facilitate mobility within the mining site.

Experience and Skills Requirements:

  • Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification, showcasing a strong educational background.
  • Entry-level to 5 years of experience in the instrumentation field, providing valuable exposure to industry practices and processes.
  • Proficiency and hands-on experience with Siemens S7-400 PLC, a key aspect of instrument control and automation systems.
  • Excellent proficiency in the English language, enabling effective communication and collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
  • Strong time management skills, allowing efficient handling of multiple tasks and responsibilities in a dynamic mining environment.
